Rita Dove Poetry Unit--Online Blog Directions

Posts need to be completed in a timely fashion.  I will “pop in” to the blog throughout the unit to assess what you have contributed. Once a work has been completed, any posts you make will NOT be assessed.  See below for the criteria I will use to score your posts.  Keep up on the reading, read and comment on the posts of others, and initiate posts.

  • Last day to INITIATE a post is Midnight on Wednesday, November 12 (night before fishbowl).
  • Last day to RESPOND to a post is Midnight on Monday, November 24 (night before supervised write).

When initiating a post, include a quote that is from the book.  Punctuate it correctly and include the title of the poem and page number (or say it is from the packet) so others can more easily locate the poem .

Hello!  Welcome to your IB English Blog!  This year, instead of writing journals in your composition book, you will be posting your brilliant analysis of literature to our class blog.  For the Rita Dove poetry unit, your assignment is as follows:

1.       Initiate TWO posts which include: a full poem OR a 2-3 line excerpt from a pem and a detailed analysis of the poem or excerpt.  Include your thoughts, refer specifically to the text, and pose any questions you might have to the group.
·       BOTH post MUST be about two of the poems included in the packet.

2.      Respond critically to TWO of your classmates' posts.  Refer specifically to the posted text, answer questions, pose other questions, etc.

3.      Heed the following directions:
a.      use clear and precise language
b.     consider the character's thoughts and feelings
c.      show you understand those thoughts and feelings
d.     explain how those thoughts and feelings were transmitted to you
e.      consider author's craft and DIDLS (diction, imagery, details, language, syntax)
f.      consider HOW + WHAT = WHY

NOTE: While this on-going assignment IS in technology-land, that does NOT mean you can use TEXT speak.

Journal Criteria:
Completion -- All entries are present, clear, legible, complete, labeled, dated and organized to your teacher’s specifications.
Connections-- These include text to text and text to society.  Independent text connections are insightful, clearly
stated, and supported.

Analysis -- Insightful, clearly expressed and supported original observations about the effects of author’s craft
